“The next big thing is the one that makes the last big thing usable.”
— Blake Ross, Co-creator of Mozilla Firefox
There is perhaps no better example to support Blake Ross' idea then the meteoric rise of Apple over the last decade. Every single one of their hit products — the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods — was not the first one of its category. But, each of these products drastically improved upon the user experience of its predecessors, and created a whole new expectation for the category as a whole.
Perhaps, then, it's wise to consider this line of thinking when planning the next phase of any existing product. The impulse is to think big: new features, new ideas, new look and feel. But it's possible that thinking small, focusing on simplifying features and improving functionality is where the real magic happens.
